Anyone who is in marketing / promoting should know that keyphrase research is King and if you are going to get things right first time, this is one thing you had better nail. Doing your groundwork is only the beginning, but if you get it nailed, your road will be so much easier. You could go out and buy the greatest product on the market and if your analysis was appalling you’d get nowhere and wonder why.
Google Keyword tool is Your friend. I’ll repeat, Google Keyword tool is your friend! When you start investigating a new market don’t just decide on the first set of results that the keyword tool spits out. If I was looking for ” commission siphon X “. I would search for the exact phrase, so I didn’t get weird and wonderful results. Google would show the monthly search volume for my keyword, as well as 800 similar keywords. Now the results google gives you are not that difficult to read – we get the search term people are using, the global monthly volume, any trend data and rough cost per click.
There might be a few keyword phrases in there that are low competition and rather a lot of monthly searches. Next, we pick those keyword phrases and search them all with the keyword tool to see if we get any alternative results that have low competition and quite a lot of monthly searches. When I say a lot, you want at least 1000, depending on the keyword and your market. For example if your starting search term was “Blue Widgets” you shouldn’t be interested in the search result “sell blue widgets” as these searchers are not buyers, they’re sellers! You probably would want “lost blue widget”, as these people did have a blue widget and they like it at least enough that they’re searching to tell people it’s gone and maybe to find a replacement.
So you’ve chosen your list of search terms, all are relevant, all have a lot of searches and relatively low competition. So how can we decide which ones are money makers and which are rubbish? well we’re pretty limited within the keywords tool, but if you’re just beginning and don’t want to fork out for expensive software yet, it can give us a general idea. Your keywords extracted from the tool all had a cpc cost per click value next to them. This is the amount of money that advertisers on google adwords are willing to pay for a click on their ad from google. For you to make any kind of decent money you want this figure to be at least $0.25 but the greater the better.
